ABOUT

Jacqui Hughes is a registered Speech Language Therapist with experience in the New Zealand and Singapore contexts. In her previous professional roles and clinical placements, she has worked in a range of settings, including private practice, schools, preschools, clients’ homes and teletherapy. She has worked with a diverse range of clients from ages 2-21 years. Her caseload comprised of children and young people with neurodiverse abilities (including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disorders, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder); developmental disorders (including Global Developmental Delay), language and articulation disorders, to name a few. Her particular areas of interest are in play-based early intervention, social communication, emotional regulation and executive functioning related to communication and language-based challenges for school-aged children and adolescents.

She is a strong advocate for evidence-based practices and is committed to helping clients live functional and meaningful lives with the gift of communication and relationships. Her background in Health Science and Psychology has also equipped her to work with clients using a biopsychosocial approach, which considers the client in a holistic manner, giving her an appreciation for working within multidisciplinary teams to help clients achieve holistic outcomes. She offers trauma-informed care and her therapeutic approach is strengths-based and developmentally appropriate, which supports clients’ engagement throughout the therapeutic journey.

She believes the best outcomes can be achieved when families, teachers and significant others are involved in the child’s therapy journey and therefore, adult coaching is a key part of her therapy plan. She has seen how supporting and equipping families to understand their child’s individual profile, strengths and needs empowers them to actively problem solve and make decisions that are best for their child and family unit.

Having lived in several countries, she is keenly aware of cultural and linguistic differences and the importance of providing culturally safe services. Her experience has taught her to be a creative, empathetic communicator.

Jacqui is a wife and Mama to two inquisitive little people. In her non-work time, she is out and about, looking for new adventures (big and small) with them.
